While our students have traditionally tested their oral speaking skills in class presentations, they don't get many opportunities to speak formally in a one-to-one conference. One way to practice these intimate speaking skills is by conferencing individually with your students throughout the project. You can put a sign-up sheet with dates and times that work for you throughout the semester and ask them to sign up for a time that works best for them.
Check-Point: You can use conference time to do a formal checkpoint with each student. How are you doing? How is your project going? Have you had any hurdles you've had to jump yet? How is your mentor working with you? Do you have any questions for me? Do you have any questions about the Pitch and/or Final Presentation?
Pitch Grading: You can use the conference time as an opportunity for the students to Pitch their ideas to you before the Pitch.
One grade you might want to consider for your rubric is whether or not the student remembered to show up on the appointed date and time. Other topics might include strands right out of the grade-appropriate Common Core Standards.
